have full-time employees. job recruiters though are a little more optimistic about it. their advice, if you are a part- timer, work hard, it could lead to a staff position. >> thank you, grace lee. one week after the connecticut school tragedy the national rifle association has broken its silence. cbs 5 reporter joe vazquez tells us why the group's position is creating a new outcry. joe. >> reporter: allen, they announced today the nra did that they want armed security guards in every school in america. that's something familiar here at richmond high school where they have had armed officers for six years. they do believe it has made a difference. but many are wondering whether the nra went far enough. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> reporter: after being silent on the subject for more than a week after the slaughter in newtown, the chief of the national rifle association declared today the nra's

solution for stopping school shootings is to have an armed guard in every school. just like they have them at banks and sports arenas. >> why is the idea of a gun good when it's used to protect the president or our police but bad when it's used to protect our children in our schools? >> reporter: the nra proposes a new program to protect america's schools called national school shield, but they were not able to protect their own news conference from protestors. >> the nra has blood on its hands! >> reporter: california senator dianne feinstein, who is proposing a new assault weapons ban, says she is upset the nra didn't go any further about gun restrictions. >> it's inconceivable after what the nra said to me today that they don't think people who have guns should have background checks or that they

should be registered. >> it's a horribly poor choice to say, you know, that the answer to gun violence is to put more guns out there. >> reporter: andrew is a parent of students in the west contra costa school district based in richmond. the school district deploys 20 armed police officers in all high schools and middle schools at a cost of $2 million a year. the district has put no cops in its three dozen elementary schools and has no plans or money to do so. >> i'm glad we're having that conversation because i think we have experience here. i think it's an overreaction if you want to know my position as a dualy elected school board member. how am i going to put armed police officers at 50 schools? >> reporter: it's expensive and it's a complicated issue. just to give a sense of how complicated it is, consider columbine. that high school had an armed security officer. that incident happened during a time in the country when there was a ban on semi-automatic

weapons. and allen, remember it was president clinton following columbine who called for a nationwide discussion about putting armed security officers in schools. >> joe vazquez, thank you. new tonight amid the debate over gun control and restrictions, bay area ranges are seeing a sharp increase in the number of people had want firearms training. cbs 5 reporter da lin shows us who is signing up for shooting lessons. >> reporter: this person fired a gun for the first time in her life. >> shaky. my arms are tired. >> reporter: before pulling the trigger, she attended a class in south san francisco to learn how to safely store and use a gun. >> to see what it's like and see if i do feel any sort of sense of power being female and 5 feet tall. >> finger discipline. >> reporter: many bay area instructors see a big increase in the number of people signing up for gun safety courses and

many of them are first time gun users. the owner of bay area firearms scott jackson typically trains about 50 people a month. this month, business skyrocketed six times. >> this month we went up to about 300 and 85% are female. and they are coming in for training and they're also buying firearms. >> reporter: sarah may hillhouse is one of his students and got her training thursday. she says she decided to learn how to use a gun after two men recently tried to break into her house while she and her three daughters were inside. she had also been held up at gunpoint twice when she managed a bank. >> 5'1", and i'm a very small person and he want to defend myself. >> reporter: experts say there are lots of reasons why more people are taking gun safety courses. they newtown's shooting. they say talks of tighter gun control policies played a big policy. the two women say it's a personal decision and they hope

never to have to point a gun at someone. in south san francisco, i'm cbs 5 reporter da lin, cbs 5. keeping an "eye on the storm." a north bay husband and wife narrowly miss being crushed by this falling tree this morning in inverness as couple was leaving to make holiday donations. the douglas fir came crashing down on top of the carport as they were getting in their car. the woman says the force of the crash pushed her into a ditch. she believes that saved her life. also in the north bay, a section of state highway 1 in marin county total watchout for much of the afternoon. closed in both directions in fact by tomales petaluma road because of flash flooding. reopened just before 5:00 tonight. but the storm is affecting traffic all over the bay area on one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. cbs 5 chief meteorologist paul deanno keeping an "eye on the storm" with live high-def doppler radar. >> it's been a sloppy day with wind gusts over 40 miles per hour. and also, a lot of rainfall out

the sierra avalanche center predicted. it's falling on packed snow and now the fresh powder is unstable. they are calling it high avalanche danger throughout the backcountry this weekend. reporting for cbs 5, i'm neda iranpour. whoo and the snow level is down low isn't it? >> at one point it was 1500 feet. that sounds good but it actually makes travel worse and we have windy conditions. i checked all the ski resorts and they are all saying windy not that good today but the wind will relax this weekend. it will be a trick getting there but look at all that area shaded in pink. that is all a winter storm warning. snow level will rise over the weekend between 5,000 and 7,000 feet but that's fine for most resorts. 2 to 5 feet of new snowfall by monday. guess what, folks. a little break and that's good for those of you who are traveling this evening. i-80 was so wet earlier but from vacaville all the way back to vallejo through martinez, fairfield and the bay bridge were dry right now.

a lot of water on the road but nothing new falling from the sky. just a few light showers basically hugging the south bay and union city and fremont and hayward. here's what's going on. it's a pretty significant weather system that stretches all the way from central canada down now to los angeles. what we're going to see we are going to see these areas of lower pressure move into the bay area over the next couple of days. we had one this morning. it was windy and wet. we'll get another one tonight windy and wet again. then a break tomorrow late in the day. sunday here comes another one of the the overall pattern is going to get locked in place with high pressure to our south and west, lower pressure to our north and west that's allowing all of these storms to sneak right in between the two into northern california so aside from christmas eve, there's a rain chance each of the next seven days. so tonight, we are getting a break now. rain will pick up after midnight tomorrow morning very wet. then we get another break tomorrow evening so we have to go shopping got to get out tomorrow evening is a good bet then the rain comes back on

decades. now, investigators say they've made a brea now at 6:30 it's the first murder to happen in an exclusive bay area neighborhood in four decades. investigators have made a break in the case of a young woman was charged in court today with being an accessory to the murder of a millionaire in his south bay mansion. mark sayre tells us police don't think this was a random

attack. >> reporter: that judge set bail for $1 million for the single mother. while she has not been charged in this murder, her attorney says detectives are very much pressing her for information about the case. 22-year-old raven dixon of alameda appeared in alameda county superior court wearing shackles accessory to a homicide with a gang enhancement in the murder of ravi kumra in his home. dixon agreed to an extension of her case. >> extend that? >> yes. >> reporter: but the details of the charges and what led to dixon's arrest are currently under court seal. sandra mitchell is dixon's mother. >> i love my daughter and my love and prayers are with her and the family and we're praying for the best, we are. she has done everything her ability to clear herself, and she did everything she is supposed to do and i'm proud of

her. >> reporter: while mitchell would not discuss the specifics of the case, she says her daughter is scared. >> she's a nervous wreck. this is new and she's, you know, to see her in chains like that come out it's hard for our family. >> reporter: kumra was a well- known businessman in the south bay a one-time owner of the mountain winery. today the los gatos-montserrano police department assures the public that the murder was not random and there is no ongoing danger to the community. as for dixon, she was arrested in mountain view this past tuesday. her attorney says his client has been questioned by police just one aspect of this investigation he is concerned about. >> i have a lot of questions on how a single client mother gets arrested being charged with a pc-32 and nothing anybody or any of her family members know anything about it. it's just out of the blue charge and i think they might just want somebody to charge

that homicide to. >> reporter: now, a spokesman for the los gatos-montserrano police department will only say that this investigation is very much activity. it is ongoing. the police department won't specify how many additional suspects may be sought in connection with this murder. allen, back to you. >> mark sayre, thank you. we are following a developing story in central pennsylvania. it's where a gunman shot and killed three people including a woman who was decorating for a children's christmas party at a church. police say the gunman killed two other men at another location before he was shot and killed by state troopers. investigators are still looking for a motive. the nation paused to remember the victims of last friday's mass shooting in connecticut. [ bell tolls ] >> had the rain came down in newtown as bells across the nation rang 26 times at 9:30 a.m. their time marking the moment when one week ago, 20 children and six adults were killed. a moment of silence was also observed at the white house and

people living in newtown say the shooting still echoes seven days later. >> i grew:in this town and i needed to come here to mourn with everyone to show my support. >> five more funerals planned for today with more this weekend. today lawmakers started heading home for christmas without reaching a deal on the looming "fiscal cliff" so that means there are now just 10 days remaining until the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts kick in january 1. disagreements over how much to raise the taxes and cut spending continued to separate democrats and republicans. president obama called on house speaker john boehner to come back to the negotiating table and avoid the "fiscal cliff." >> as of today, i am still ready and willing to get a comprehensive package done. >> the remarks came after speaker boehner failed to gather enough of his party's support to bring his so-called plan b to the floor for a vote. his proposal would have effectively raised taxes only

on those americans making more than a million dollars a year. house and senate members will be back at the capital on december 27th looking for that solution. wall street worried about the "fiscal cliff" talks, stocks closed sharply lower today. the dow dropped more than 120 points. the nasdaq fell 29 points. the s&p dropped, as well. california cannot stop people from using the so-called conversion therapy to try to turn gay minors straight. the federal appeals court issued an emergency order late this afternoon putting the law banning the therapy on hold. the law was the first of its kind set to take effect january 1. licensed counselors and two families who say their teenaged sons have benefited from it sought the injunction citing free speech rights. it's official. president obama has nominated senator john kerry to be the new secretary of state. kerry is a former presidential candidate and an expert at

so she no longer a student instead a professional. her message tonight is useful, timely and deeply felt. weather we first met salina lane she was only 19 and totally on her own. she and her younger sister lived month to month in east oakland raising their younger brother. they work minimum wage jobs after school to pay the bills. no welfare, no parents to rely on. >> it's something that will never go away. when you feel rejected left alone and abandoned that is the hardest thing in the world to accept because you know it was done intentional. >> if you can imagine children from the time they're infants where no one cares whether you wake up, have food, clothes, much less clean clothes, whether or not you go to school. >> reporter: we followed silena as she graduated from usf then

served in the peace corps in africa. now she is the program director for a nonprofit called up on top working with kids from the tenderloin and the western addition. but more recently, it was a tragedy that reconnected us. in august, she get a late-night call from her uncle. >> of course he couldn't get a word out and i knew even before he said it that someone in our family was murdered. >> reporter: her cousin malik was only 16, murdered in what appeared to be an attempted robbery. it was a flashback for silena whose brother was murdered in 2006. frederick layne, his case never solved. >> it's never a moment in a day that i don't think about my brother and how he impacts every decision that i have made. >> reporter: during the last 10 years, 10 members of silena's family have been murdered but

it's her cousin's murder that haunts brother's murder. should she have skipped the peace corps to be home with him. >> i have to establish myself in a solid foundation. >> reporter: she talked about her brother at a speech for students rising would every. >> i thought i could give him something of substance some guidance but i later realized that he needed a man, a father, and not just a big sister. >> reporter: more than half the homicide victims in the united states are african-americans 85% men mostly young. >> we need our men to be role models. >> that's another good one. >> reporter: but it's not just men she says. it's everyone. and the values begin at home. >> i lead by example. going to work every, single day making sure my bills are paid, making sure that i'm constantly

day, too. >> mm-hm. >> thank you, wendy. >> you're welcome. all right. happening right now, rain, wind cold. >> here's the kitchen sink. go ahead and take it all on day one. it started at 3:12 a.m. this morning for winter and the rain started there for san francisco. this is all i can find in the east bay and south bay and the peninsula. redwood city across the dumbarton to union city, fremont, hayward, showers right now. this will head to the north and east. that will hit you in the tri- valley, pleasanton, livermore, dublin, also seeing some showers toward the coast south of pacifica but looking at the overall big view there's not much going on for san francisco in the north bay currently and that's good because you have two inches of rain earlier today and we are looking at some showers about 4 or 5 hours north of san francisco. that's the leading edge of the rain that will get here after midnight tonight. let's show you a couple of the beautiful sights of today. it was wet and windy but we also this that beautiful mix of sunshine and rain which gives us pictures like this.

lots of rainbows around with that mix of sun and rainfall today. mid-50s outside right now. san francisco 3535. san jose 56. so many of you heading to the mall on a friday night in concord now it is currently 53 degrees. we can thank the cloud cover for preventing from us getting anywhere close to a freeze. couple of nights ago you were in the 20s. now we are look at upper 40s, low 50s. napa 48 degrees. big area of low pressure to our north and west will continue for the next several days to feed in these waves of lower pressure into the bay area. that initiates the rainfall and we have about two more to go before we get a break on christmas eve. another one gets here tonight, early tomorrow. we get a break tomorrow evening. that's the one time over the weekend i'm fairly confident it will be dry late in the day tomorrow. and then the pattern just kind of holds with the exception of christmas eve.

we'll have a chance of rainfall for each day over the next 7 and a wet pattern likely to continue into the new year with that storm track aimed right toward us. rainfall totals we are looking at an additional almost inch for san rafael, san francisco. our computers predicting more than an inch of rainfall for redwood city. so what to expect in rain picks up tonight. we get a break tomorrow evening. we'll be wet on sunday before we have a dry christmas eve. the only dry day of the next several. oakland 57 tomorrow. concord 54. san jose 57. sunnyvale 57 degrees. we are looking at highs in the mid-40s for concord, san ramon and pleasanton with rain early tomorrow. petaluma 53. san francisco 55. extended forecast, pretty soggy over the weekend. we get that break on christmas eve for you last, last, last- minute shoppers. christmas day rain returns in the afternoon and showers will be around next wednesday, thursday and friday. not so good news if you like dry weather but excellent news if you like it go skiing and here's your ski report: no new snow in heavenly as of
